It’s difficult to ignore how unremarkable the scene seems in comparison to the machines that are actually being discussed—machines that are subtly changing entire economies.
Nvidia had no intention of becoming this kind of business. It was primarily recognized in the late 1990s for graphics cards, which were devices used by gamers to improve their visuals. These same chips—refined, scaled, and pushed to the limit—became the foundation of artificial intelligence at some point. As this shift has developed over time, it seems that even Nvidia was unaware of how important it would become.

However, it’s still unclear if this position is long-term or merely a result of the current surge in interest in AI.
Nvidia’s rise is noteworthy in part because it has expanded beyond chip sales. The business is stealthily constructing a whole ecosystem, including networking, hardware, software, and even cloud partnerships, bringing various facets of the AI economy under its control. Jensen Huang speaks more like someone outlining an industrial system at recent conferences than like a chipmaker.

At first, the phrase seems a little abstract. However, the concept takes hold: intelligence is generated continuously and at scale as data is received. Although it’s a manufacturing model, people aren’t accustomed to seeing it.
Another level of complexity has been introduced by the transition from training AI models to executing them—a process engineers refer to as inference. The initial excitement was created through training, but the money seems to flow more steadily through inference. Recognizing this early on, Nvidia has begun modifying its technology to also capture that stage. This change could determine whether the company continues to dominate the market or gradually loses ground to rivals producing more specialized chips.
Rivals, meanwhile, are moving forward. In an effort to become less dependent on Nvidia, businesses like Google, Amazon, and Microsoft are making significant investments in their own processors. There is a palpable tension in industry conversations—competitors underneath, partners on the surface. Nvidia appears to be aware of this, as evidenced by the billions it has invested in infrastructure projects and alternative cloud providers, almost as if creating its own parallel network.
It is hard to overlook the size of these investments. Data centers, optical networking companies, and AI startups are receiving billions of dollars. Additionally, there is the tangible reality of what Nvidia is developing. Due to their massive energy consumption, data centers necessitate new planning, infrastructure, and trade-offs. However, there are also issues with land, power use, and long-term sustainability.

It’s still unclear if that structure will endure or break in the face of competition and change. But it’s hard to get rid of the feeling that something fundamental has already changed while standing in those silent server halls and listening to the constant hum of machines—and Nvidia is right in the middle of it.
