T.I., whose real name is Clifford Joseph Harris Jr., established himself as one of the most distinctive voices in Southern hip-hop. He became a worldwide celebrity thanks to songs like “Whatever You Like” and “Live Your Life.” However, there has always been another storyline going on outside of the music charts: his unusually large and highly visible family.

The rapper from Atlanta is raising a blended family of seven children, including Zonnique, Messiah, Domani, Deyjah, King, Major, and Heiress, with his wife, Tameka “Tiny” Cottle-Harris. However, the children were never merely incidental. Long before the cameras came, Tiny’s daughter from a previous relationship, Zonnique Pullins, was experimenting with music. While still in her teens, she joined the girl group OMG Girlz and began performing on stages. She made an appearance on Growing Up Hip Hop: Atlanta, a program that followed hip-hop artists’ kids as they attempted to forge their own identities, years later.

Zonnique might have realized early on what the others would eventually discover: having well-known parents opens doors, but it also raises expectations.

That lesson appears to have been taken seriously by T.I.’s eldest son, Messiah Harris. Under the moniker Buddy Red, he has performed blues-inspired music and worked as an actor in recent years. There’s a suggestion that he’s purposefully choosing a look distinct from his father’s trap-rap heritage when you watch him perform in a loose jacket and old-fashioned sunglasses.

Domani, his brother, took a somewhat similar route. His approach to music, however, seems more contemplative—slower beats, reflective lyrics, the sort of sound that implies someone attempting to emerge from a deep shadow.

One of T.I. and Tiny’s other sons, King Harris, entered rap culture more directly. He has adopted a louder, more ostentatious persona while performing under the stage name Kid Saiyan, which fits in well with the current social media era. Videos of him fighting with his father or performing new music are frequently shared online, occasionally generating dramatic yet strangely recognizable headlines.

It’s difficult to overlook the Harris children’s upbringing during a time when public entertainment revolved around celebrity families.
